Great leaders are like great lifeguards: they watch the whole pool, step in when needed, and don’t wait for someone to sink before throwing the life ring.
Here’s how to lead like a lifeguard:
1. Scan for Signals
Just like a lifeguard watches for swimmers in distress, leaders need to watch for subtle shifts in morale, engagement, or team dynamics.
2. Jump In Smart
Rescue doesn’t mean rescue everyone all the time. Know when to empower versus when to intervene.
3. Use the Whistle
Set boundaries, enforce them, and communicate with clarity. Leading isn’t about being liked—it’s about being respected.
4. Teach Others to Swim
Develop your people. Delegate. Coach. If you’re the only one keeping the team afloat, you’re doing it wrong.
Lifeguard Wisdom:
Rested leaders lead better
Drama is contagious—don’t feed it
Every team needs a strong swimmer AND a strong coach
